Knowing What Can and Can't Be Recycled

Last updated 3 months ago

The goods you purchase from supermarkets, retail stores, and online vendors come in a variety of packaging types. This can sometimes make it difficult to know which containers you should place in a recycling bin and which materials you should throw away. In order to avoid double handling of recyclables and waste products and the contamination of genuine recyclables, you should familiarize yourself with the waste removal and recycling regulations in your municipality. While it is important to refer to and follow your local recycling code, this article can provide you with an overview of the materials that are almost universally recyclable and those which cannot be recycled anywhere.

What can be recycled?

  • Aluminum and tin cans: Soda pop cans and tins that food was canned in should be rinsed before they are tossed in the recycling bin, but they are likely recyclable in your area.
  • Paper: Almost all paper products, including magazines, newspapers, scrap paper, promotion flyers, file folders, phone books, and textbooks, can be recycled, even if they have staples, paper clips, or spiral wire binding on them.
  • Cardboard
  • Aerosol cans
  • Specially-marked plastics: Mass-produced plastics are imprinted with numbered triangles. Plastics numbered “1” or “2” are recycled in most American cities. Check with your waste collection and recycling service to see if any other plastics can be recycled in your area.
  • Glass bottles

What cannot be recycled?

While none of the following products are recyclable, they can be donated and reused if they are still in good condition.

  • Drinking glasses
  • Windows and mirrors
  • Ceramics and cookware
  • Light bulbs
  • Crystal
